Vitamin D3 and Immune Support

Do you frequently get respiratory infections or a “cold”, or feel “run down” or have other signs that your immune system may not be functioning optimally? Visit our pharmacist to ask about immune support. Supplements including vitamin D3 and probiotics are examples of supplements that offer multiple benefits.

The Linus Pauling Institute of Oregon State University recommends that generally healthy adults take 2,000 IU (50 mcg) of supplemental vitamin D3 daily. This is especially important for older adults because aging is associated with a reduced capacity to synthesize vitamin D in the skin upon sun exposure.

Effective probiotic supplementation is important to intestinal health, which in turn is vital for a healthy immune system. It is important to take a probiotic product that contains multiple species, usually including Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria. Probiotics are measured in the numbers (in billions) of live organisms present in a daily dosage. To maintain healthy levels of intestinal flora, 2 billion or more live cells daily are recommended and can be taken indefinitely for maintenance purposes. To address existing imbalances, 10 billion cultures or more may be needed. This dose is far greater than what a person receives from eating yogurt.

Our pharmacist can recommend quality preparations that can help to boost your immune system.
